The Apostle Paul wrote, "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight" (1 Corinthians 3:19). The word "foolishness" comes from the Greek word "moria" that has the meaning of "moron." Compared to God's wisdom, mankind's wisdom is that of a moron.
Humans spend their lives gaining knowledge in grade school, high school, college, graduate school and life's experiences, but when we try to compare human knowledge to God's knowledge we find that human knowledge is always lacking. I have been a pilot for over 40 years, I have an Airline Transport Rating, a Commercial Helicopter Rating, a Type Rating in a jet, and several thousand flying hours. But compared to what God knows about flying, my wisdom on flying is not much. Like the saying goes, "Man O man, so ignorant in that which he knows best."
God gives us the ability to learn, but everyone does not have the same learning level. God gives some people the intellect of a genius, but even a genius will soon realize that there is never an end to gaining knowledge and that someone else will come along and discover something that the first genius overlooked. Mankind's knowledge is progressive; that is the difference between mankind and God, God already knows everything, He doesn't have to learn anything. It is impossible to compare man's wisdom with God's wisdom. There is no way of comparing the finite with the infinite.
Because of our arrogance, humans have the tendency to think that we can handle about any situation. We really believe that we are smart! It is in the areas where we have our greatest abilities, where we are personally and genetically strong, and have self-confidence, that we say, "Lord, I can handle this one, I don't need Your help." And invariably, it is in these areas of our lives that we so often fall on our face. We find out that we aren't so smart after all. There are more things in our lives that we can't control, than the things that we do control. That ought to tell us something about how wise we really are.
The apostle Paul understood how prone we are to become conceited about how intelligent we are. He wrote, "To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Paul knew that he was strongest and wisest when he depended on God's wisdom and strength.
God has a perfect knowledge of all the thoughts of mankind, He knows that we are just flesh (Psalm 78:39), that is made out of dust (Psalm 103:14). He understands our weaknesses. God knows and understands the motive behind our every thought and deed. We might fool everyone else, but God knows the real reason why we do the things we do. God knows our innermost secrets. The Bible says, "Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight, everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account" (Hebrews 4:13).
Human wisdom is the most foolish in the area of spiritual truths; human wisdom is useless when it comes to understanding salvation and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. Human wisdom has no way of discovering or understanding spiritual truths. Paul wrote, "The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Corinthians 2:14). A person receives the Spirit of God when they put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Until a person does that they are spiritually dead and cannot understand spiritual things, Paul tells us that unbelievers are actually blinded by Satan (2 Corinthians 4:3-4). Only the Spirit of God can open the mind of a person to understanding spiritual things.
Human wisdom says to get rich. God's wisdom says, "People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction" (1 Timothy 6:9). Human wisdom says to be popular, but God's wisdom says, "Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man" (Luke 6:22). Human wisdom says to be charming and attractive, but God's wisdom says, "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting" (Proverbs 31:30).
Human wisdom says to trust our political leaders, God's wisdom says, "It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man" (Psalm 118:8). Human wisdom says that only the strong survive. God's wisdom says, "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5). Human wisdom says the world came about by a big bang and that humans evolved from animals. God's wisdom says, "For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible" (Colossians 1:16). Human wisdom says that this life is all there is. God's wisdom says, "The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). You can choose God's wisdom and have eternal life in Heaven, or you can choose this world's wisdom and spend eternity in the lake of fire with Satan and his angels. The choice is yours.
