Deposition and swath testing of the Thrush 510P

by Alan McCracken
In August of this year, Thrush Aircraft, Inc. contracted with me to conduct a series of tests with various spray volumes and equipment to determine the effective swath width for the Thrush G510P aircraft with various spray volumes and drop sizes. The goal was to maximize productivity. The aircraft was flown by Thrush Aircraft’s Terry Humphrey at the Thrush factory in Albany, Georgia. The flying speed for all treatments was 140 mph. The aircraft was outfitted with several nozzle/atomizer set ups; FF1550 (flat fan), FF6510, CPllTT, D8-45, D4-45 and Micronair AU5000 rotary atomizers. Weather conditions were hot and dry with temperatures up to 37°C (98°F) and relative humidity as low as 45%. Under more normal spraying conditions with chemical products the droplet sizes collected would be larger, since it would suffer less from evaporation loss.

NAAA: More bang for your buck

In this economy, every dollar counts. Spending your hard earned money on the National Agricultural Aviation Association’s membership dues may seem frivolous or even unimportant; after all, “I’m already a member of my state’s aerial application association and besides, NAAA is a national organization and must have a huge membership base. Surely they won’t miss my membership, right?” Wrong. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Super Air closes on 1,500 lost time injury-free days

Aerial fertiliser spreading company Super Air marks a key milestone of more than four years with no lost time due to injuries (LTIs) this month. On December 16, Super Air will celebrate 1,500 LTI-free days, the result of a focussed commitment to health and safety which commenced in 2007. About 50 pilots, loader drivers, engineers and other support staff work for the Ballance Agri-Nutrients-owned aviation company.

Hal Tacker, painter, from ag aviation background

Hal Tacker wakes up at 2 a.m. and starts painting. Not every day, just lately — and with a kind of renewed passion for art that had been dormant, if not truly missing. It has never really been missing, even before Tacker realized it was art. "I could be drawing an airplane right there," chuckles Tacker, showing off a baby picture with him sitting on the ground next to his father's ag plane while holding a piece of paper.

Why your breakfast banana may become an endangered species

If you sliced a banana over your cereal this morning, or whipped one up in a smoothie, you most likely ate a Cavendish. Though more than 1,000 types of bananas exist worldwide, the Cavendish is the pick of producers — it’s a fragile but extremely productive and cheap fruit that can be shipped long distances to satisfy global demand.

Australia's Kevin Patchett sows rice over the Riverina, news article and video

Five agricultural aviation companies that serve the agricultural industry in Louisiana got their equipment tested recently at the Jennings airport with the help of the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.

Jennings, Louisiana operators test equipment

Kevin Patchett approaches the end of the paddock a little after sunrise. He eases back on the power and steers his ''tractor'' to the left in a tight and noisy U-turn. Dust shoots out from underneath and sprays the side of a truck, the farmers looking on, and a once-white ute. Steir family featured in Iowa aviation

When Morris Maurie Steier got his pilot's wings 65 years ago, he had no idea that he was starting a family tradition one where the sky's the limit. Steier enjoyed an early celebration of his 91st birthday Sunday the actual day is Nov. 11 surrounded by family members and their eight Beechcraft Bonanza airplanes at the North Omaha Airport. The family patriarch was the first to land, setting down his 1955 Bonanza as easily as if he were parking a car outside church.

Lane Aviation donates help on wild fire in Fort Bend County, Texas

A fire in southeast Fort Bend County Wednesday afternoon destroyed between 300 and 700 acres, officials said. The fire between the towns of Beasley and Needville started in a pasture about 3:20 p.m., said Fort Bend County public information officer Bob Haenel.

IA ag-operators help farmers

The risks are great. The job is seasonal, with this year's work basically finished. But crop-dusters --- "aerial applicators" in the modern parlance --- will say there's a real "high" involved in doing what they do every summer. "I like dealing with the farming community," said Glenn Speas, owner of Speas Aviation near Belle Plaine, which operates 12 planes and 12 helicopters. "I've flown as an airline captain for about 10 years, flying commercial 727s, 737s, before I got out in 2000. With the way things are going, I'm glad I'm not with the airline industry anymore."
