There are over 1500 Old Testament passages of Scripture that refer to the Second coming of Jesus Christ. There are 330 verses of Scripture in the New Testament, or about one out of every 25 verses in the New Testament, that directly refers to the second coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ refers to His second coming to this earth twenty-one times, and over 50 times we are exhorted to be ready for Jesus’ return to this earth. Jesus Christ’s second coming to this earth is a major theme throughout the Old and New Testament. Only the subject of faith is mentioned more times in the Bible than the subject of the second coming of Jesus Christ to this earth. For every time the first coming of Jesus Christ is mention in the Bible, the second coming of Jesus Christ to this earth is mentioned eight times. Jesus said, “For the Son of Man is going to come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will reward each person according to what he has done” (Matthew 16:27).
“Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war” (Revelation 19:11). This is the glorified Son of God, Jesus Christ, coming to defeat His enemies and rule His earth. The psalmist wrote, “Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O Mighty One, with Your glory and Your majesty. And in Your majesty ride prosperously because of truth, humility, and righteousness… For He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with His truth” (Psalm 45:3-4, 96:13). God will cause the entire world to see Jesus Christ coming out of the heaven.
“His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself” (Revelation 19:12). Jesus Christ sees the inside of every human heart and mind; He knows what we think, our motives, and everything we say and do—His eyes penetrates everything. The Greek word for crowns is “diadema” meaning kings crowns, which speaks of His royal rank and authority. The many crowns means that He has the ultimate authority over everything in His universe. Satan loses his authority over the earth, the Antichrist loses his crowns, and all other earthly rulers lose their authority. “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” (Revelation 11:15). Only Jesus Christ knows the name that is written!
“He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God” (Revelation 19:13). This is not Jesus’ first battle. Jesus Christ defeated Satan and conquered sin by the shedding of His own blood during His persecution, and when He died on the Cross. “He washed us from our sins in His own blood” (Revelation 1:5). But this is not the blood Jesus shed on the Cross; this is the blood of His enemies from His trampling them in the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. “Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, and I have stained all My robes” (Isaiah 63:3). This is Jesus Christ, the Almighty Conqueror, and He has His war clothes on that are stained by the blood of His enemies. John wrote, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:1, 14). Jesus Christ is the full expression of God. Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).
“And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses” (Revelation 19:14). These armies are angels and every believer that has gone into heaven since Adam and Eve, and they will come with Jesus Christ when He comes back to this earth. “The Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-10). “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints” (Jude 14). Both angels and believers, appear in bright, white clothing (Revelation 3:4, 15:6). Are you going to be a part of Jesus Christ’s army? It’s your choice!
“Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations” (Revelation 19:15a). This sword coming out of Jesus’ mouth is symbolic of the destructive power of His spoken word. “He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked…His mouth is like a sharp sword” (Isaiah 11:4, 49:2). All unbelievers in all the nations on earth will be judged by God’s righteous Word. They are slain because they have violated God’s Word and refused God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ literally and physically slays His enemies at His second coming (Revelation 19:21).
“And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God” (Revelation 19:15b). Jesus Christ’s initial rule of the nations will be a violent and instantaneous destruction of His enemies, as He breaks them into pieces like the potter’s vessels (Psalm 2:9, Revelation 2:27). For thousands of years Satan has ruled this earth (John 12:31, 16:11; Ephesians 2:1-3), and blinded the minds of men and women and used them for his purposes (2 Corinthians 4:4). Now, Jesus Christ, the rightful owner of this earth, has come to rule His earth. There will be worldwide peace when Jesus Christ sets up His earthly kingdom (Isaiah 9:7).
It’s an eternal mistake to be like the scoffers that live according to their own sinful lusts who say, “Where is the promise of His coming?” (2 Peter 3:3). Jesus said, “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done” (Revelation 22:12).
